UK micro-businesses and SMEs are losing up to 250 hours of working time each week due to patchy mobile phone connectivity. Sound familiar?
That’s an hour of working time per employee per week spent wrestling with the problem. Sound familiar?
New research, carried out by YouGov and industry partners, showed that those smaller businesses that provide employees with work phones are losing out on more than an hour of working time per employee, per week, as poor connectivity leaves staff unable to get online or to complete work effectively.
We already know that loss of business revenue has a significant impact on the British economy – it is an estimated loss of economic output amounting to £7.7bn every year. And, of course, the issue is hitting businesses at an already challenging time, with soaring business costs. Professional services and retail sectors are hardest hit by the costs of poor connectivity, according to the research, and this lost working time equates to reduced business revenues of c. £18.77bn a year.
Legal, accounting and media businesses, as well as retail, were the most bruised by the issue. The data also shows that 32 percent of SMEs felt they were paying too much for phone contracts and looking to cut costs.
