PSTN Switch-Off Delayed Until 2027

BT Group has recently announced that the PSTN switch-off of all copper-based data and phone lines across the UK will be delayed until January 2027, just over a year later than originally planned.

If you’ve just breathed a sigh of relief and mentally moved the goalposts of when you’re going to upgrade to IP-based systems, don’t! This doesn’t mean that you can delay your plans. Instead, we recommend you use this extension wisely…

Read on to discover why BT is switching off the copper-based data and phone lines, why there has been a delay, and how you can use this extra time in a way that will benefit your business.

What is the PSTN Switch-Off?

BT will be switching off local telephone exchanges, with the end goal of all copper-based phone lines and data across the UK being shut down by 2027.

This is because the infrastructure is outdated, and the capabilities of PSTN cannot meet the needs of the modern world (Internet calls, video conferences and online collaborative tools).

According to Ofcom’s Connected Nations UK Report 2023:

  • In 2023, the number of PSTN incidents increased by 20%
  • In 2023, there was a 60% increase in hours lost for customers on the PSTN

Why has the PSTN Switch-Off been delayed?

According to BT, the switch-off program needed to be enhanced to better protect vulnerable customers and those with additional needs, including telecare users.

Trials were also conducted in Salisbury and Mildenhall, which highlighted the need for more work to reach and mobilise non-engaged communication providers, as well as migrating their customers safely off the legacy technology.

What to do now?

Just because the switch-off date has been extended, it doesn’t mean that your business can rest on its laurels! BT will still switch off local telephone exchanges, so you shouldn’t delay your plans to upgrade to IP-based systems.
