A snapshot of Uplands history

Following the sad news of Debenhams store closures, Uplands Managing Director, Paul Hooper, reflected on Uplands and Debenhams historical partnership.

“Not surprised, but really sad. Debenhams lasted 240 years. What began as a drapers store at 44 Wigmore Street, London, and grew to over 180 department stores in the U.K is now to close and become another brand and IP purchase.

Some 20 years ago I presented an idea to the board at the BT Tower. This saw Uplands in every Debenhams store for EasyLife and Cellnet U PAYG phones. A relationship that saw the opening of our World of Bright Future stores and Communic8 with Debenhams concessions, and lasted for over 6 years.

When Debenhams joined the stock market (for the third time) in 2006, it was valued at £1.7 billion. When shares were suspended, they were each worth less than 2p, valuing the business at just £20 million.

The slide to the bottom for a once-proud retailer has been nothing if not inevitable, despite the best efforts of the board and their staff.
