Are You Ready For the 2G and 3G Mobile Switch Off?

Alongside the upcoming switch off of the old analogue phone network, the PSTN, the UK Government and all major mobile operators have agreed to additionally phase-out existing 2G and 3G networks to support the new 4G and 5G networks, which according to Ofcom, offers faster and more reliable services for customers.

Looking at the history of networks, 2G was originally introduced in the nineties to allow digital voice calls and SMS, while 3G kicked off mobile data, which we now use every single day. But these are outdated network types, which TechUK calls ‘legacy technologies’ mentioning that they are ‘increasingly expensive to maintain and inefficient from an energy perspective.’ Mobile UK also makes the comparison that 5G is in fact ten times more energy efficient than 3G.

While some may think 2G services will be the first to become inaccessible from mobile devices, it’s been confirmed that 3G will be the first to be phased out over the next few years; 3G will have less of an impact on customers, allowing a longer time to switch over and replace your device.

Here’s a breakdown of the upcoming dates to put in the diary with the UK’s top mobile network providers:

  • Vodafone has started its switch-off of 3G networks in Plymouth and Basingstoke areas in February 2023
  • EE plans to start its 3G switch-off in early 2024.
  • Three expects to switch-off all 3G and 2G networks by the end of 2024.
  • By 2033, all 3G and 2G networks will be switched off.

It’s worth noting that customers with our Direct Partner O2 will not be affected by this nationwide switch off until 2033, as O2 does not currently have plans to terminate this network. Customers living in areas covered by Vodafone, EE and Three will see their networks upgraded to 4G coverage following the switch-off.

So how does this affect you?

We have some expert advice on how to prepare for the 2G and 3G nationwide switch off:

  1. While Ofcom will not be involved in managing the termination of these networks, this useful document outlines the upcoming changes and provides assistance on how you can keep up with the latest updates that may impact your phone networks.
  2. There are other devices, including smart meters, payment terminals, security alarms and telecare devices that use the 3G or 2G network, and these will have to be upgraded. We recommend speaking to your providers of these devices to see what they can do.
  3. For your 2G and 3G mobiles, your mobile provider should contact you, but it doesn’t hurt to reach out first to get one step ahead of the curve and avoid joining the queue of others also waiting to switch over.
