Uplands Top Tips to Avoid Roaming Charges

With the summer holiday season in full swing, we’re here to help customers avoid the dreaded roaming charges.

What are roaming charges?

‘Roaming charges’ refers to the higher prices mobile networks typically charge for using mobile phones when abroad.

Depending on the country and the network’s roaming policy, you may have to pay more to make calls, send texts and use mobile data.

Roaming charges can dangerously accumulate, and without knowing what you’re spending, you could end up with a huge bill to pay at the end of your holidays.

According to The Guardian, Sky Mobile customers visiting the Maldives or Seychelles could be spending £8.64 every minute for calls to local or UK mobiles – which is £130 for a 15-minute phone call! For most people, coming home to these unforeseen costs can be disastrous.

 How to avoid these charges

  1. Check with your provider and set a mobile bill limit

The first step is to check your network provider’s roaming policies to see if charges will apply while you’re travelling.

Most providers allow you to set a spending cap to your data or a mobile bill limit for set periods, which most people opt for when visiting overseas countries to allow for ease of travel, transportation, communication and general mobile usage.

  1. Research mobile bundles

If using your mobile phone is a non-negotiable while abroad, many operators offer bundles including daily or weekly charges that allow you to make add-on purchases for a set number of calls, texts or data.

  1. Flight mode

If you don’t require access to texts, calls, or data services whilst away, your mobile phone can be switched to Airplane mode to avoid charges entirely and you can instead connect to available Wifi.

Additionally, video and audio content such as music, podcasts, or television shows can be downloaded prior to travelling for you to enjoy without using your data.
